on april 30, 2015, elon musk announced factory heretofore known gigafactory known gigafactory 1 tesla plans build more such factories in future. @ same event, musk said believed other companies build own similar gigafactories . after receiving $800m of orders ($179m powerwall, $625m powerpack) within 1 week of unveiling, musk estimated gigafactory 1 not enough supply demand.


in may 2017 @ ted talk, elon musk stated intention announce 3 or 4 new gigafactory sites. these factories manufacture both batteries , complete cars enable global production of products.
