september 17, 1901: santa fe inaugurates service on grand canyon railway, running between williams, arizona, , south rim of grand canyon.
january 1905: first-class, santa fe-built el tovar hotel opens doors. structure situated 20 feet canyon rim.
june 29, 1929: grand canyon limited enters service; schedule 66 hours each way between chicago , los angeles.
june 4, 1938: grand canyon limited rerouted on belen cutoff through amarillo, texas. transit time reduced 60 hr 15 min westward , 58 hr 35 min eastward.
july 7, 1945: combined train no. 2 (the scout) , no. 24, powered locomotive #3733, strikes caterpillar shovel. locomotive s pilot, headlight, , cylinders damaged.
june 2, 1946: grand canyon limited begins running via riverside-fullerton) instead of pasadena.
june 8, 1947: train receives first diesel locomotives , stainless-steel lightweight passenger cars. train broken 2 sections , name shortened grand canyon; schedule reduced 48 hours, 45 minutes.
december 27, 1949: train no. 23 collides automobile @ grade crossing in highland park, california, flattens wheels on locomotives.
may 31, 1951: combined train sideswiped train no. 123 in chandler, arizona, derailing cars #rsx 287, express #2558, baggage #1634, , chair cars #3108 , #3070. no. 123 cars baggage #1791 , #1601, chair cars #3087, #3158, , #1169, diner #1461, lounge #136, , sleepers l.s. hungerford, tonelea, toreva, , centgate sustain damage.
april 5, 1964: train no. 123 5 diesel units , 16 cars hits rockslide @ 81 miles-per-hour near doublea, arizona, derails 5 diesels, passenger car , ten baggage cars.
early 1968: santa fe railway files permission discontinue passenger service grand canyon national park; grand canyon train stripped of name becoming trains 23 , 24.
may 2, 1971: final train 24 left los angeles on april 30 arrives @ dearborn station in chicago, ending santa fe revenue passenger service.
