1919–1937
the university founded private institution in 1919. nankai s scale relatively small @ inception partly because received no funding government instead funded foreign charitable funds , local entrepreneurs, 3 departments (liberal arts, science, , business) , 96 students. noted particularly courses taught in english using foreign curricula , textbooks. 1937, nankai had expanded university of 3 colleges, 13 departments, , 2 research institutes, boasting 429 students , 110 faculty , staff members. compared north star of higher learning . in accordance motto of dedication public interests, acquisition of all-round capability , aspiration progress each passing day , university has produced batches of prominent talents such premier zhou enlai, dr. shiing-shen chern, dr. ta-you wu , mr. cao yu. well-known nankai institute of economics established in 1927 , became 1 of prominent in china being first non-foreign entity calculate chinese consumer price index.
1937–1949
in july 1937, during sino-japanese war, nankai campus severely damaged japanese bombings. two-thirds of school buildings destroyed including library deliberately burnt down japanese imperial army. number of school s artifacts, including university bell, looted , remain in japanese museums till day.
in august 1937, still during sino-japanese war, nankai university, peking university , tsinghua university united , formed national changsha provisional university, later moved kunming , renamed national southwestern associated university. in 1946, after war, nankai returned tianjin , reformed national university government. @ time, nankai had 4 schools (liberal arts, science, political science , economics, , engineering) , 16 departments.
1949–1966
after establishment of people s republic of china, nankai readjusted , became comprehensive university emphasis on arts , sciences, 14 departments , 3 professional specialties in total. since then, leading scholars zheng tianting, lei haizong, wu tingqiu , many overseas scholars us, europe , japan have come join university.
1966–1976
from 1966 1976 school s normal life out of order due cultural revolution. worse, in 1976 catastrophic earthquake broke out in tangshan bordering tianjin, causing damage of varying degrees school s buildings.
1976–present
second main building of nku
after 1980, nankai added number of new specialties , institutes. in arts, applied specialties on financing set , school of economics reopened in 1983, while in sciences, interdisciplinary, marginal , high , new technological specialties added. late 1980s, nankai university had grown comprehensive university embracing humanities, natural sciences, applied sciences, life sciences, managements , art. in 1994 tianjin foreign trade college merged nankai. in 1999 under combined efforts of nankai , teda, teda college set up. in 2000 state ministry of education signed agreement tianjin municipal government on jointly establishing , developing nankai university. experimental cooperation between nankai university , tianjin university initiated on principle of independent school-running , close cooperation. in 2002 under cooperative efforts of nankai, government of shenzhen , uc berkeley, financial engineering college established in shenzhen.
