st bede s college, manchester (on alexandra road south), roman catholic independent school founded in 1876, built aquarium not commercial success. college acquired after having been established in manchester city centre. built of red brick , terracotta , frontage ornate. if building appears asymmetrical, because money ran out wing on north side of main entrance, built in 1870s. in 1930s college gave land @ end of mayfield road, preferring expand eclectically westwards toward alness road, known albert road. @ same time sold playing fields had been between college road , burford road, site of whalley range cricket club, , st margaret s c.e. primary has playing fields, acquiring freehold of whalley farm. area west of withington road became playing fields, rest continued farm until late 1960s, when became site of st george s rc high school. in 1980s cenacle convent s large red brick building on wellington road became part of college s campus, along area freed demolition of several houses on road.
william hulme s grammar school (in springbridge road) established independent school in 1887, became direct grant grammar school in 1946, , returned full independence in 1976. in 2007, school rejoined state education sector, scrapping annual tuition fees , selective admissions test in exchange funding academy. school s specialist subject languages, , continue select 10% of pupils on basis of aptitude modern languages.
hartley college further down alexandra road south built primitive methodist college in 1879: kassim darwish school boys (a muslim grammar school).
whalley range 11–18 high school , business , enterprise college large non-denominational secondary school girls, on wilbraham road, moved in 1930s smaller site on corner of burford road , withington road (known britannia row , because of large statue of britannia on frontage of annexe on burford road. statue came manchester s old town hall on king street). there preparatory department @ crimsworth , site of manley park junior school. anomalous bulge , bend in withington road @ point explained need carriage entrance building. unusually, school had begun boys school on graeme street, before moving site. became girls school in 1891, counterpart 2 boys schools mentioned above. nowadays, large majority of students minority ethnic backgrounds, many originating in pakistan. of students in sixth form minority ethnic backgrounds. number of students first language other english higher national average, 3 common languages spoken students being urdu, somali , arabic. school has specialist status business , enterprise college, , since 2007 has been designated sports college. school assessed in march 2007 ofsted report. estelle morris, baroness morris of yardley, 1 time secretary of state education , skills , minister arts, notable alumna.

our lady s r.c. primary school on whalley road partly housed, until 1990s, in former imperial german consulate, seized during first world war custodian of enemy property.
originally there meant third parallel road york avenue , cromwell avenue, called woodlands road, authorities noticed large number of children growing in area. developer therefore allowed build bury avenue, rest of plot devoted manley park county primary school, , recreation ground, known manley park, (colloquially known rec until 1980s). after phase of further developments on egerton estate, school expanded crimsworth annexe, large house , garden @ west end of college road. in 1970s school famous steel band.
st. margaret s cofe primary school on withington road occupies pre-world war ii site of whalley range high school girls. playing fields @ rear had formerly belonged st bede s college, manchester.
