in 34–32 loss, michigan became second team ever ranked in ap top 25 lose division fcs team. michigan started out strong, finishing first quarter 14–7, mountaineers scored 21 unanswered points go 28–14 before halftime. after trailing 28–14 in first half, michigan recaptured 32–31 lead 3 appalachian state turnovers , dazzling 54-yard touchdown run senior running mike hart 4:36 left in game.


however, after teams traded possessions, mountaineers drove 69 yards in 11 plays, , julian rauch connected on 24-yard field goal 26 seconds remaining in contest give asu 34–32 lead. after failed pass attempt, chad henne connected mario manningham on hail mary pass under 15 seconds left michigan 20-yard line. michigan had chip shot 30-yard field goal give michigan looked escape upset. then, shocking college football world, appalachian state s corey lynch blocked kick 6 seconds left seal huge upset. attendance game 109,218. adding insult injury, michigan dropped out of top 25 in next poll. first time in history of ap poll team ranked in top 5 had fallen out of poll result of single game , second time ranked fbs team defeated fcs opponent.
