following thomas s death faourite succeed him prominent nonconformist minister, josiah towyn jones, had been active in politics of constituency since last 1880s. half-hearted attempt made prominent liberals select less radical candidate these came nothing.


mervyn peel, had opposed thomas in 1910, fought spirited campaign independent labour party candidate, dr j.h. williams, denied support labour party nationally , made limited impact. jones returned comfortable majority , remained member until constituency abolished in 1918.
