two-way tie division or wildcard

one game tie-breakers played between teams tied division championship or wildcard berth on day after season scheduled end.


two teams tied division championship play tie breaker if such game eliminate loser playoffs completely. case in 2009 when minnesota twins , detroit tigers tied @ end of regular season american league central division title. since 2009 season, home advantage has been determined comparing teams involved in tie set of performance criteria, first tiebreaker being head-to-head record. accordingly, first one-game playoff under new rules, al central playoff between minnesota twins , detroit tigers, hosted twins, won scheduled season series 11–7. twins won game , advanced division series, swept eventual world series winners, new york yankees.


two teams tied wildcard berth (such both teams have worse record division champion, whether in same division or not), play tiebreaker game. home field advantage in scenario given according tie-breakers outlined in next section.


prior 2009, home field advantage in game determined series of coin tosses occurred few weeks before end of season between teams close enough each other in standings tie becomes significant possibility. if new situations occurred (i.e. team rises in standings making tie possible) more coin tosses occurred. contrary believe, home field advantage not determined head-to-head record in regular season until 2009. example, in 1995, seattle mariners , california angels played one-game playoff break tie al west championship. mariners hosted (and won) 1 game playoff, lost season series 5 games 7 games (excluding 1 game playoff).


if postseason berths not in dispute

no game played if both teams guaranteed go playoffs. example, team loses tie-breaker game division still go playoffs wildcard. in case, rules below used determine division winner.


two-way intradivision tie-breaker, both teams guaranteed playoff spot 1 wildcard , 1 division champion. division title awarded in following priority:



the loser of tie-breaker goes playoffs wildcard team.

if 2 champions separate divisions have same record, tiebreaker needed determine seeding. current set-up of major league baseball divisions, there 3 possible scenarios.




the top 2 teams have same record, neither team in division wildcard. here, intra-division tiebreaker @ bottom of previous section used. determines first , second seed.
there clear winner of first seed, remaining 2 division winners have same record. again, intra-division tiebreaker @ bottom of previous section used. determines second , third seed.
