wilks began training taekwondo , bruce lee s martial art style, jeet kune while living in united kingdom. moved united states , began training under erik paulson combat submission wrestling. wilks moved better @ jiu-jitsu , other ground skills. wilks holds black belt in taekwondo , black belt in brazilian jiu-jitsu.


he had first professional fight against ultimate fighter 5 competitor, roman mitichyan. wilks won fight via armbar submission in second round. after fight took around year break fighting focus on training students. came have second fight , lost jimmy smith. before going tape ultimate fighter 9, wilks won gladiator challenge welterweight title.


after filming of ultimate fighter ended, wilks opened own gym, lightning mma in laguna hills, california.

after starting pro career 5-2 mark in local shows in california, wilks chosen compete on ultimate fighter: united states vs. united kingdom. representing team uk under coach michael bisping. defeated highly regarded che mills submission in elimination match earning him trip las vegas, nevada compete on show. wilks had second fight against team united states fighter frank lester. wilks won fight submission in second round. in semi-finals, wilks faced lester second straight time, after lester returned tournament defeat david faulkner while substituting jason pierce, removed competition dana white. in rematch, wilks defeated lester tko via knees in third round, earning spot in live finale.

wilks made debut ufc winning against damarques johnson @ tuf 9 finale on 20 june 2009. fight crowned wilks tuf 9 welterweight champion. wilks dominated fight against johnson showing off strong striking , submission attempts. wilks finished fight johnson via rear naked choke submission in closing seconds of first round.


wilks lost matt brown via 3rd round tko, on 14 november 2009 @ ufc 105. after being knocked down in second , being saved bell submission attempt, wilks came in third round, attempting kimura, before losing top position. brown then, top position, secured tko victory. prior ufc 115, wilks revealed brown had broken orbital bone elbow strike after 30 seconds of first round.


wilks faced peter sobotta @ ufc 115. after 3 rounds, fight went judges scorecards, wilks took 30-27, 30-28, 30-27.


wilks next fought canadian prospect claude patrick @ ufc 120 in london. lost fight via unanimous decision.


wilks expected face rory macdonald on 30 april 2011 @ ufc 129. however, wilks replaced on card nate diaz.


wilks expected replace duane ludwig, , face amir sadollah @ ufc fight night 24. however, wilks injured , replaced damarques johnson.


retirement

after suffering extensive injuries included fractured vertebra , after doctors told him faced high risk of paralysis if continued fight, wilks announced retirement active mma competition on 14 may 2012. final record, including fights on ultimate fighter tv show, 10 wins , 4 losses.
