founding , expansion
the acc established on june 14, 1953, when 7 universities of southern conference left form own conference. these 7 universities became charter members of acc: clemson, duke, maryland, north carolina, north carolina state, south carolina, , wake forest. left partially due league s ban on post-season football play. after drafting set of bylaws creation of new league, 7 withdrew southern conference @ spring meeting on morning of may 8, 1953 @ sedgefield country club in greensboro, north carolina. bylaws ratified on june 14, 1953, , acc created, becoming second conference formed schools collectively withdrawing socon, after southeastern conference. on december 4, 1953, officials convened in greensboro, north carolina, , admitted virginia, socon charter member had been independent since 1937, conference.
in 1960, acc implemented minimum sat score incoming student-athletes of 750, first conference so. minimum raised 800 in 1964, struck down federal court in 1972.
in 1971, south carolina left acc become independent.
1978 & 1991 expansion
the acc operated 7 members until addition of georgia tech metro conference on april 3, 1978. total number of member schools reached 9 addition of florida state, formerly metro conference, on july 1, 1991. additions of schools marked first expansions of conference footprint since 1953, though both schools still located rest of acc schools in south atlantic states.
2004-2005 expansion
the acc added 3 members big east conference during 2005 conference realignment: miami , virginia tech joined on july 1, 2004, , boston college joined on july 1, 2005, league s twelfth member , first northeast. expansion controversial, connecticut, rutgers, pittsburgh, , west virginia (and, initially, virginia tech) filed lawsuits against acc, miami, , boston college conspiring weaken big east conference.
2010–present
the acc hall of champions opened on march 2, 2011, next greensboro coliseum arena, making acc second college sports conference have hall of fame after southern conference (socon).
on september 17, 2011, big east conference members syracuse university , university of pittsburgh both applied join acc. 2 schools accepted conference following day, once again expanding conference footprint previous expansions. because big east intended hold pitt , syracuse 27-month notice period required league bylaws, entry date acc (barring negotiations) july 1, 2014. however, in july 2012, big east came agreement syracuse , pitt allowed 2 schools leave big east on july 1, 2013.
on september 12, 2012, notre dame agreed join acc in sports except football , hockey conference s first member in midwestern united states. part of agreement, notre dame play 5 football games each season against acc teams beginning in 2014. on march 12, 2013, notre dame , big east announced had reached settlement allowing notre dame join acc effective july 1, 2013.
on november 19, 2012, university of maryland s board of regents voted withdraw acc join big ten conference effective in 2014. following week, big east s university of louisville accepted acc s invitation become full member, replacing maryland effective july 1, 2014.
the acc s presidents announced on april 22, 2013, 15 schools members of conference in 2014–15 had signed grant of media rights (gor), effective , running through 2026–27 school year, coinciding duration of conference s then-current tv deal espn. move prevents acc being target other conferences seeking expand—under grant, if school leaves conference during contract period, revenue derived school s media rights home games belong acc , not school. move left sec 1 of fbs power 5 conferences without gor.

in july 2016, gor extended through 2035–36 school year, coinciding signing of new 20-year deal espn transform current ad hoc acc network full-fledged network. new network launch digital service in 2016–17 school year , linear network no later august 2019.
