william born on 19 february 1817 in palace of nation in brussels, part of united kingdom of netherlands @ time. eldest son of future king william ii of netherlands , anna pavlovna of russia. had 3 brothers, 1 of whom died in infancy, , 1 sister.


in 1827, @ age of ten, made honorary colonel in royal netherlands army. in 1830s, served lieutenant in grenadiers regiment. in 1834, made honorary commander of grenadiers regiment of kiev nr. 5 in imperial russian army.
