the group began singing in 1962 in jersey city, new jersey vydells , consisted of joe calamito, tom d alessandro, russ capo, louis francischini , charles romano, ranged 13 15 years old. gained popularity, became part of wmca disc jockeys toby clare , jack spector s record hop dances, opening acts broadways, duprees, mccoys, randy & rainbows, ronnie , highlights, , lenny welsh.

in 1963 group reformed, adding lead vocalist joanne lucas , first tenor robert taglierini, replaced russ capo. retaining founding members joe calamito, tom d alessandro , charles romano group became known joanne , heartaches recording catamount records, cappella record label. joanne , heartaches scheduled sign roulette records in summer of 1966 knocked out british invasion.

joanne , heartaches performed 1963 1967 , after lead singer joanne lucas left, gerri o neil became lead singer , second female voice added- joanne bevacgua. new 5 person group consisting of geri o neil, joanne bevacqua, joe calamito, tommy d alessandro , charlie romano; 2 females, , 3 males (a rare combination time ) recorded both catamaount label , sky disc records.

in 1970s catamount records released heartaches - lampost love songs, cappella album. featured both original singer joanne lucas , geri o neil.

the group refrained live performances in later 1970s, resurfacing in 1981 heartaches founding members joe calamito , tom d alessandro, adding raul vicente , phil granito, , dropping female lead. four-man vocal group sang aid of guitar , coined phrase rockapella unique sound. in 1981 article in aquarian magazine, writer rich lee notes heartaches performing group called rockapella because of use of 4 voices , 1 guitar.

in 1983 won first ever vocal contest doo-wop concert promoter richard nader , won right appear @ madison garden 2 shows @ richard nader s november 1983 concert.

the heartaches of 1980s moderately commercially successful. worked opening act, contributed children s album pickle ate chicago, sang backup on sassoon jeans commercial, sang backup back-up singers on british hit s not on artist choppers, , performed country singer-songwriter jan chamberlin. heartaches signed one-year production contract rca records in 1985, dropped @ end of year. heartaches performed until 1989 , disbanded.
