as end of mitterrand s term in office approached, socialist party torn struggle of internal factions, each seeking influence direction of party. hollande pleaded reconciliation , party unite behind jacques delors, president of european commission, delors renounced ambitions run french presidency in 1995. former party leader lionel jospin resumed position, , selected hollande become official party spokesman. hollande went on contest corrèze once again in 1997, returning national assembly.

the immediate resignation of jospin politics following shock defeat far-right candidate jean-marie le pen in first round of 2002 presidential election forced hollande become public face of party 2002 legislative election. although managed limit defeats , re-elected in own constituency, socialists lost nationally. in order prepare 2003 party congress in dijon, obtained support of many notable personalities of party , re-elected first secretary against opposition left-wing factions.


after triumph of left in 2004 regional elections, hollande cited potential presidential candidate, socialists divided on european constitution, , hollande s support ill-fated yes position in french referendum on european constitution caused friction within party. although hollande re-elected first secretary @ le mans congress in 2005, authority on party began decline. domestic partner, ségolène royal, chosen represent party in 2007 presidential election, lose nicolas sarkozy.


hollande blamed poor performances of socialist party in 2007 elections, , announced not seek term first secretary. hollande publicly declared support bertrand delanoë, mayor of paris, martine aubry go on win race succeed him in 2008. hollande next elected replace jean-pierre dupont president of general council of corrèze in april 2008, , won re-election in 2011.
