by 1979, herb , jan conn had discovered, named, , mapped more 64 miles (103 km) of passages. although largely retired caving 1980s, exploration has continued unabated. because areas being explored take many hours reach, explorers camp in cave during expeditions of long 4 days. cave mapped traditional survey techniques, using compass, clinometer , today lasers instead of tape measures.


its 181.89 mi (292.72 km) of mapped passageway make jewel cave third longest cave in world, after mammoth cave system in kentucky , sistema sac actun @ yucatán peninsula (mexico), @ 198 mi (319 km).


the discovered areas in cave account 3 5% of estimated total air volume of cave. cave volume estimated measuring amount of air cave exhales when outside air pressure drops , inhales when outside air pressure rises.
