military service

woodwark’s career exclusively 1 of public service. served in armed forces in first world war. having been years associated local territorials, woodwark raised , trained battalions in england in period of war. served in france, 1916–18 , wounded on somme. while in france gained legion of honour (1917) , mentioned in despatches in same year. on discharge hospital joined war office , sent on british war mission america in 1918. remained in usa fifteen months, during period deputised british ambassador, lord reading. retained connection ta reaching rank of colonel in 2/5th battalion of norfolk regiment, although during mission usa , throughout 1920s referred lieutenant-colonel.

beliefs

woodwark proponent of traditional liberal policy of free trade. seems have been supporter of conservatives @ 1 point associated himself liberals. in 1926 became chairman of eastern counties liberal federation. position less crisis surrounding national government unfolded. @ 1931 general election woodwark publicly supporting conservative mp home town of king’s lynn, lord fermoy national government on principle of sound money. seems have been part of general agreement between conservatives, liberals , liberal nationals in norfolk. woodwark maintained support new national candidate @ 1935 general election, though liberal candidate, mr f darvall, adopted contest seat.


local government

woodwark served on king’s lynn town council, of sometime alderman. in 1926 , again in 1932 mayor of town. member of various committees including town planning committee, , elementary education , war pensions committees, both of chaired.


parliament

woodwark first stood parliament liberal candidate king’s lynn @ 1922 general election. in tight three-cornered contest came third behind sitting conservative mp, neville jodrell held seat , labour candidate, r b walker. @ 1923 general election in ever-closer race, woodwark leapt top of poll take king’s lynn narrow majority of 677 votes. not hold on in face of national conservative revival in 1924 , lost seat tories. did not stand election house of commons again.


other appointments

like father, woodwark served justice of peace , member of juvenile panel of magistrates. member of king’s lynn conservancy board, king’s lynn docks , railway board, , eastern sea fisheries committee. pilotage commissioner wash. in pursuing interest in education, woodwark governor of king edward vii’s grammar school , member of executive committee of association of education committees.


awards

woodwark received cbe in new year honours of 1920. awarded la croix de chevalier du mérite agricole in 1932 , made grand officer of nichan iftikhar in 1933.


in 1934 created officer of legion of honour in recognition of services honorary consular agent of france , in 1937 made officer in order of orange-nassau.
