the first pacific locomotive german railway badische ivf class grand duchy of baden state railways (großherzoglich badische staatseisenbahnen), designed maffei in 1905. however, due manufacturing delays, first 3 locomotives not introduced until 1907, shortly after first french pacifics. four-cylinder compound locomotives of von borries type. after maffei locomotives, further 32 built under license karlsruhe engineering works , delivered between 1907 , 1913.



bavarian s 3/6 class, later class 18.4-5 of deutsche reichsbahn


however, successful german pacific class bavarian s 3/6 class of royal bavarian state railways (königliche bayerische staats-eisenbahnen), designed anton hammel , heinrich leppla of maffei. larger development of baden ivf class, four-cylinder compound arrangement. altogether 159 of them built between 1908 , 1931, last 1 being retired ordinary service in 1969.


when various pre-first world war pacific locomotives different german state railway companies grouped deutsche reichsbahn class 18 7 sub-classes, baden class ivf became drg 18.2 class while bavarian s 3/6 class became drg 18.4-5 class.

during 1920s , 1930s deutsche reichsbahn continued build new pacific designs, such class 01.10 class 03.10 subclasses.



the class 01, two-cylinder standard type of deutsche reichsbahn introduced between 1926 , 1938, first standardised steam express passenger locomotive class built unified german railway system.
the class 02 four-cylinder compound locomotive version less successful, being costly maintain. ten built , of them rebuilt two-cylinder 01 class locomotives between 1937 , 1942.
the class 03 lighter version of 01 class, built between 1930 , 1938. ten locomotives of 03.10 class remained in poland after second world war , designated polish state railways (pkp) class pm3. (also see poland)

in 1957, 2 prototypes of streamlined class 10 built krupp deutsche bundesbahn. nicknamed schwarze schwäne (black swans) , survived until 1968.
