the memorial constructed in granite , sandstone. cupola decorated primitive germanic shapes, inspired egyptian , assyrian sculpture. schmitz planned create accompanying complex ceremonies include court, stadium , parade grounds. however, reflecting pool , 2 processional avenues completed. surrounding monument oaks, symbol of masculine strength , endurance germanic people of antiquity. oaks complemented evergreens, symbolising feminine fecundity, , located in subordinate position oaks. 12 metres (39 ft) main figure on front of memorial represents archangel michael, considered war god of germans .


the design of monument intended commemorate spirit of german folk. unlike previous monuments commemorated achievements of monarchy, 1 created commemorate end of battle in 1813, establishment of german community, , maturation of germans organised ethnic group.
