robert conquest has stated translating rhymed poetry english rhymed poetry difficult of arts. myers took on challenge , produced mimetic rhymed versions of 19th century russian poetry (such age ago published penguin books in 1989) extracts appear in oxford dictionary of quotations. has written of approach poetry translation in sunday times (23.4.89).

in prose, major translations include works valentin rasputin, vasil bykaŭ, dostoevsky s idiot in 1992 , gentle creature , other stories in 1995 both of published oxford university press pushkin s queen of spades , other stories. myers translation of idiot has been chosen publication in people s republic of china (in english notes in chinese). translation described in oxford guide translated literature in english (2000) best available.

essays

myers translated poems , essays friend, nobel laureate joseph brodsky, appeared in new york review of books, new yorker, vogue, times literary supplement , later in brodsky s books: part of speech; less one; urania; forth , collected poems in english. extended brodsky interview appeared in valentina polukhina s joseph brodsky in eyes of contemporaries. brodsky s poetry cycle in england dedicated myers , wife diana (who both appear in work). other brodsky translations included 2 plays marbles (published penguin books in 1988) , democracy!- latter performed @ london s gate theatre. both of above have received critical praise in national press.

essays , memoirs

other notable translations included lydia ginzburg s blockade diary, , [[yuri dombrovsky]] s epic novel faculty of useless knowledge. myers has translated literary memoirs such kruchenykh s our arrival, avant-garde art criticism , jewish artistic heritage ansky (ra, 1994).

myers translation of efros essay , catalogue ansky world exhibition described brilliant... executed 1 of finest english literary translators.

other works include docu-novel on chernobyl disaster julia voznesenskaya. stories zinovy zinik including anthologised hooks appeared in new yorker , elsewhere, while mimetic rhymed versions of irina ratushinskaya have been broadcast on bbc radio 3 , published bloodaxe books.

in addition, myers has translated wide range of modern russian novels , stories, including thrillers , science fiction – edward topol s red gas (translated braille), friedrich neznansky s operation faust; strugatsky brothers snail on slope , far rainbow. bronze snail russian science fiction award named after former complex work.

the myers collection of russian speculative fiction, extensive in country, held @ university of liverpool, along history of genre.

myers has published research articles in slavonic , east european review (1990–93) , elsewhere on yevgeny zamyatin s life , writings in newcastle 1916–17. extensive original research has demonstrated crucial influence of author s tyneside sojourn on masterpiece (a strong influence on orwell s nineteen eighty-four). myers took part in bbc radio 3 documentary on zamyatin in december 2003.

his last translations appeared in utopias (penguin books, 1999), survey of russian modernism. these include versions of mandelstam, akhmatova, kharms, vaginov , zamyatin.
