german erich bautz took lead after fourth stage, bonification system give winner of stage minutes bonification time. in seventh stage, bartali took stage victory, , lead in general classification. 9 minutes ahead of ward vissers, , enough tour victory. on eighth stage, bartali not avoid team mate jules rossi crashed right in front of him, , bartali fell river. got , able finish stage. lost 10 minutes , kept lead, in next stage lost more twenty minutes, , in twelfth stage gave up.


in ninth stage, sylvère maes took on lead, closely followed mario vicini , roger lapébie. @ point, french team down 6 cyclists. these 6 cyclists had meeting, , decided lapébie team leader, rest of team far behind have chance final victory.


before start of fifteenth stage, lapébie found out frame of bicycle had been sabotaged, causing handlebars break off. lapébie made quick repairs , made start of stage, newly constructed bicycle did not have water holder, , had start stage without water. demotivated him, , lapébie began losing time in stage. stage included 4 mountains, , on top of second mountain lapébie 5 minutes behind, , wanted give up. team mate inspired him go on, , lapébie started win time. when maes punctured, lapébie able reach him, , @ end of stage julián berrendero in front of them, , lapébie won sprint second place. rewarded him 45 seconds bonification time. when tour directors gave him 90 seconds penalty time having been pushed, margin maes grew more 3 minutes, lapébie had sensed weakness in belgian team, , planned attack in next stage. belgian team complained penalty far little, because lapébie s advantage had been more. french team threatened abandon race if penalty increased, , tour direction did not change penalty.


in sixteenth stage lapébie finished ahead of maes, , cut margin down 25 seconds, flat stage enough maes. during sixteenth stage, maes had punctured, , had been 2 belgian cyclists, gustaaf deloor , adolf braeckeveldt. however, these belgian cyclists rode individuals , , not part of belgian team. tour jury fined maes 15 seconds penalty time in general classification. during race, train crossing had been closed after lapébie had passed, , before maes pass. maes offended this, , quit race, rest of belgian team. point on, easy lapébie secure victory.
