on august 28, 1902, best transported salem jail charlestown state prison. executed @ 12:22 on september 9. composed during execution , did not utter final words. witnesses prison physician dr. joseph mclaughlin, surgeon general of massachusetts robert a. blood, associate district medical examiner dr. george stedman, , deputy sheriff william cronin, presence required law. rev. i. murray mellish , representative associated press in attendance. pronounced dead attending physicians @ 12:27 am.
