during third reich, hitler used monument venue meetings in leipzig. when army captured leipzig on april 18, 1945, monument 1 of last strongholds in city surrender. 1 hundred , fifty ss soldiers ammunition , foodstuffs stored in structure last 3 months dug in, blasted artillery , defeated.


during period of communist rule in east germany 1949 1989, government of gdr unsure whether should allow monument stand, since considered represent steadfast nationalism of period of german empire. eventually, decided monument allowed remain, since represented battle in russian , german soldiers had fought against common enemy, , therefore representative of deutsch-russische waffenbrüderschaft (russo-german brotherhood-in-arms).


in 1956, opening ceremony of gymnastics , sports festival took place in memorial complex; authorities stated monument interpreted symbol of long-standing german-russian friendship . festival planners focused spirit of celebrations on german history, , ceremony symbol of desired german union.


restoration of monument started in 2003, , expected completed in 2019. monument of battle of nations located in southeast of leipzig , can reached tram lines 15 , 2 @ völkerschlachtdenkmal.
