this 7.5 m (25 ft) tall uncharactered stele built commemorate wu zetian located east of phoenix gate within qianling mausoleum. unlike other tablets located @ site, has no written inscriptions. weighs 98 tonnes , decorated sculpted dragons , oysters.
following death in 683, emperor gaozong s mausoleum complex completed in 684. after death, wu zetian interred in joint burial emperor gaozong @ qianling on july 2, 706. tang dynasty funerary epitaphs in tombs of son li xián (crown prince zhanghuai, 653–84), grandson li chongrun (prince of shao, posthumously honored crown prince yide, 682–701), , granddaughter li xianhui (lady yongtai, posthumously honored princess yongtai, 684–701) in mausoleum inscribed date of burial 706 ad, allowing historians accurately date structures , artwork of tombs. in fact, sui , tang dynasty practice of interring epitaph records person s name, rank, , dates of death , burial consistent amongst tombs imperial family , high court officials. both old book of tang , new book of tang record that, in 706, wu zetian s son emperor zhongzong (r. 684, 705–10, li chongrun s , li xianhui s father , li xián s brother) exonerated victims of wu zetian s political purges , provided them honorable burials, including 2 princes , princess mentioned above. besides attendant tombs of these royal family members, 2 others have been excavated belonging chancellor xue yuanchao (622–83) , general of left guard li jinxing.
the 5 attendant tombs mentioned above opened , excavated in 1960s , 1970s. in march 1995, there organized petition chinese government efforts excavate emperor gaozong , wu zetian s tomb.
