first issue (1982-1990)

the 50 dollar note issued in 1983 fill gap between 20 , 100 dollar notes. first issue had portrait of elizabeth ii mango-orange (yellowish-orange) background. on morepork or ruru, new zealand s extant native owl. owl perched on pohutukawa, tree found on new zealand coast , referred new zealand christmas tree. watermark of captain james cook.


second issue (1990-1999)

the series redesigned. these notes resemble current series except few notable differences. first there metallic strip left of sir apirana ngata. secondly there latent image on upper-right hand side of note. note made of cotton-based substance, not polymer modern notes. colour drastically changed current violet, partly distinguish reddish orange of $5 note.


third issue (1999-present)

the third version of fifty dollar note issued on may 3, 1999. reserve bank of new zealand issued updated note because expected last 4 times longer counterpart, paper banknote. bank has noted notes non-porous (they not absorb liquids) , therefore cleaner. notes have better features paper notes, deters counterfeiters.


ngata, member of new zealand s parliament 38 years, had important role in māori renaissance, on front. left of portrait porourangi meeting house, @ waiomatatini marae on new zealand s north island, near town of ruatoria. on kokako or blue wattled crow, species north island. in background pureora forest park on north island. park larger 75,000 hectares.
