1940s

1944: there no oil bowl year. instead, wichita falls played host texas high school coaches association s annual coaching school , it, north-south all-star game. maskat shrine temple still records game oil bowl. blair cherry assistant coach north , got @ 1 of future university of texas stars, quarterback bobby layne of highland park. couple of guys goose creek high stole spotlight. george walmsley threw 25-yard touchdown pass high school teammate bill taylor. walmsley threw td pass, , taylor set touchdown catch south win 19-7.

1945: in first oil bowl matching texas vs. oklahoma, august pelz of wichita falls passing star in 13-0 win texans. pelz set texas first touchdown pair of 16 , 15-yard passes, first art sweet of san antonio brackenridge , sammie pierce of vernon. pierce got td on 9-yard run. final td set 50-yard pass pelz harold clark of highland park. bill engle of greenville scored yard out. oklahoma crossed midfield 1 time in game.

1951: after helping wichita falls win back-to-back state championships in 1949 , 1950, speedy james self had big night in final game @ coyote stadium. self contributed 134 yards of total offense in texas 20-6 oil bowl victory. ran 4 times 59 yards , caught 2 passes 75 yards, , 44-yard touchdown catch quarterback duane nutt of corsicana sealed deal in fourth quarter. max boydston of muskogee voted oklahoma s top after 71-yard rushing performance. nutt voted top of game, texas, , ed bernet of highland park top lineman.

1966: bub deerinwater of wichita falls rider played final game before hometown fans , ran 54 yards on 11 carries, scored on 7-yard run , kicked both point in texas 14-0 win. however, linzy cole of dallas madison offensive mvp after rushing 44 yards in 12 carries. chuck hixson of san antonio highlands started @ quarterback texas knocked out of game on vicious tackle future heisman trophy winner steve owens of miami. james street, led university of texas national championship in 1969, replaced hixson. danny cantrell of mckinney led texas defense 12 tackles. owens gained 4 of team s 45 rushing yards on 18 carries.
