in 19th century patrick neill wrote of local flora eda mossy island; great part of consisting of barren marshy heaths. juncus uliginosus here covers whole acres; , pretty little plant radiola millegran, or all-seed, everywhere strewed. on 120 species of wild plants have been recorded on island including bog myrtle found else in orkney.
in mid-17th century, eday described being absolutely full of moorland birds , today there red-throated divers on mill loch, arctic skuas , bonxies on moors , black guillemot offshore. shore birds include meadow pipit, rock pipit , ringed plover. woodland @ carrick house attracts variety of migrants , otters can seen around coasts. there colonies of harbour , grey seals on muckle green holm, little green holm, faray , holm of faray, , white-beaked dolphin, minke whale , killer whale occasional visitors area. ranger provideds guided walks throughout year.
