Route description Maritime Line



perranwell station


the line, heads south-westwards until point, heads towards south , passes high above silted-up restronguet creek on carnon viaduct. valley route of redruth , chasewater railway down quays @ devoran, mile beyond viaduct. part of mineral tramway trails.


a half-mile later, line comes perranwell railway station, 4 miles truro. modern shelter situated on platform, built in style inspired older railway buildings. stations except truro, platform on left train travels towards falmouth. in forecourt old cornwall railway goods shed.


the line begins head west, passing on short perran viaduct , south again along hillside above perranwell village before passing through 374-yard (342 m)-long perran tunnel.


turning south-eastwards, line passes on ponsanooth viaduct, tallest on line. ponsanooth village on hillside right, while river kennal runs below join restronguet creek.

the line passes beneath a39 road truro falmouth @ treluswell, 4 cross, , shortly enters penryn grew @ head of large inlet of river fal. penryn railway station @ top of town, , have views across town st gluvias on other side of harbour. station 8 , quarter miles truro, , platform shelter identical 1 @ perranwell. beyond station line passes on collegewood viaduct. last timber railway viaduct in cornwall here, replaced stone structure on 22 july 1934.


at penryn there wide open space occupied cornwall motor auctions. goods yard wagons loaded , unloaded. there platform visible on other side of train, though overgrown.


the line enters outskirts of falmouth. town established @ entrance inlet leads penryn; has spread reach town. trains first call @ penmere railway station, useful people heading top of moor in town centre, or newer western suburbs.


passengers quick glimpse on right of falmouth bay before trains call @ concrete platform of falmouth town railway station, nearer national maritime museum, waterside, , shops.


it short distance terminus @ falmouth docks railway station, 11.75 miles (18.91 km) truro. falmouth docks below station on left, pendennis castle overlooks both these , gyllyngvase beach on other side of line. sidings serve docks little used.
