there have been total of 4 congregations have had territory partially split off st. mary s: st. raphael s in east dedham (1878), st. catherine s in south dedham (norwood), (1890), west roxbury s st. john chrysostom (1952), , st. susanna s in riverdale section of dedham (1960).

due growth of catholic population, 200 parishioners in east dedham reassigned in january 1878 father richard barry s care in germantown association s chapel (st. theresa s church) in west roxbury. on october 28, 1878, st. raphael s chapel established on thomas street in east dedham territory had been broken off st. mary s. dedicated archbishop williams, st. raphael s sat 400 people, , in 1880 added hall amusement of young men @ cost of $8,000.


many not pleased change, , first mass attended 6 people. petition presented archbishop williams asking him reunite parishes, , proposing transform chapel had been erected school.


the new parish sponsored court 26 of catholic orders of foresters. court survived church, staying active @ least 1920s. after burned ground on december 17, 1887, st. raphael s merged st. mary s.


st. catherine s

only 6 years after building first church, building purchased unitarians of south dedham @ site of present day st. catherine s rectory. purchase price $3,000. named st. catherine of siena, dedicated on august 3, 1863. town of norwood broke away dedham in 1872, , st. catherine s established separate parish in 1890 1,500 parishioners.


st. susanna s

by 1930s st. mary s 1 of largest parishes in archdiocese on 6,000 parishioners , 1,300 students in sunday school. during middle of decade there 4 priests , 6 nuns ministering congregation. in 1950s became clear second parish needed in dedham, , st. susanna s established in 1960 serve needs of riverdale neighborhood. when st. susanna s opened had 300 families, while 2,500 stayed @ st. mary s. first pastor of st. susana s, michael durant, lived @ st. mary s while church being constructed.
