defending champion jordan spieth shot 6-under-par 66 take two-shot lead on danny lee , shane lowry. bogey-free round ninth consecutive masters round of par or better. world number 1 jason day 5-under-par through front 9 shot 5-over-par on nine, including triple-bogey on 16th hole, end @ even-par. ernie els scored record-worst 9 on first hole after taking 6 putts within 3 feet , ended round @ 8-over-par. course played difficult due windy conditions , scoring average field 74.16.

jordan spieth led many 5 shots carded 4 bogeys , double bogey , needed 14-foot par save @ 18th preserve one-shot advantage on rory mcilroy. spieth s sixth consecutive round lead @ masters, tying record set arnold palmer in 1960–61. amateur bryson dechambeau got within shot of lead suffered triple bogey @ last finish @ even-par. gusting winds led difficult scoring conditions, 4 players (daniel berger, dustin johnson, mcilroy, , troy merritt) shooting under par, each shooting 71. scoring average round 75.02, highest since 2007 , 7 golfers under par after 2 rounds. tom watson missed cut in 43rd , final masters.

jordan spieth held lead @ masters seventh consecutive round, new tournament record, , third straight year after 54 holes. after double bogey @ 11th, spieth rebounded birdies on 3 of next 4 holes take four-shot lead, bogeyed 17th , carded double bogey on 18th post 73 (+1) , drop lead one. smylie kaufman recorded lowest score of round 69 (−3) , moved second place. two-time champion bernhard langer, @ age 58 attempting become oldest major champion, shot round of 70 , tied hideki matsuyama third, 2 shots of spieth. rory mcilroy entered round shot out of lead failed make birdie , carded 77 (+5).

danny willett came 5 shots down @ start of 9 win first major title. jordan spieth birdied final 4 holes of front-nine open five-shot advantage. after bogeys @ 10th , 11th, spieth put 2 balls in water on par-3 12th , made quadruple bogey, dropping him tie fourth. willett, meanwhile, made birdie @ 13 , 14 take lead. lee westwood chipped in eagle @ 15th within 1 of willett, made bogey on 16 while willett made birdie. willett made par on last 2 holes post round of 67 , five-under tournament.
after rebounding birdies on 13 , 15, spieth needed birdie 2 of last 3 holes tie missed 8-foot (2.4 m) birdie @ 16 bogeyed 17 fall out of contention. spieth s downfall in final round capped 1 of biggest collapses in masters history, many comparing meltdown of greg norman @ 1996 masters. dustin johnson made birdie on 13 , 15 within 2 of willett, made double bogey on 17th. smylie kaufman began round shot out of lead shot 81 (+9) , finished in 29th. first time in masters history, 3 players (shane lowry, davis love iii, , louis oosthuizen) made hole-in-one on par-3 16th.
