greenwich borough council

hume entered politics in november 1900 when elected newly constituted greenwich borough council member of conservative-backed moderate grouping. topped poll in charlton ward, , became leader moderates took control of new council.


london county council

in march 1910 hume elected london county council represent greenwich. member of majority municipal reform party, title used conservatives, on county council. re-elected in 1913, , appointed chairman of highways committee. in capacity in may 1914 presided on ceremony commission new turbines @ greenwich power station of london county council tramways.

in 1918 hume succeeded ronald collet norman leader of municipal reformers , council. although party had majority of seats, had formed wartime coalition opposition progressives. hume, re-elected in 1919, continued agreement until 1922. hume elevated rank of county alderman in 1922 hold until death. in 1924 knighted. in 1925 resigned council leader, , in 1926 elected ceremonial post of chairman of l.c.c.

in 1922 hume nominated conservative candidate parliamentary constituency of greenwich. elected large majority on labour party opponent, edward palmer. further election held in 1923, , palmer unseated hume. hume unseated palmer @ 1924 election, situation reversed in 1929. in 1931 hume regained seat, palmer s vote reduced presence of communist candidate, , re-elected 4 years later.


apart municipal , parliamentary offices, hume member of london , home counties traffic advisory committee, thames conservancy board , london , home counties joint electricity authority.


in 1932 married dorothy hunt blundell. in 1938 indicated intention stand down @ next election. in event, elections postponed due second world war, , remained in commons until 1945.


sir george hume died @ home @ blackheath, london in september 1946, aged 80.
