there 3 national historical parks; kalaupapa national historical park in kalaupapa, molokaʻi, site of former leper colony; kaloko-honokōhau national historical park in kailua-kona on hawaiʻi island; , puʻuhonua o hōnaunau national historical park, ancient place of refuge on hawaiʻi island s west coast. other areas under control of national park service include ala kahakai national historic trail on hawaiʻi island , uss arizona memorial @ pearl harbor on oʻahu.


the papahānaumokuākea marine national monument proclaimed president george w. bush on june 15, 2006. monument covers 140,000 square miles (360,000 km) of reefs, atolls, , shallow , deep sea out 50 miles (80 km) offshore in pacific ocean—an area larger of national parks in u.s. combined.
