Origins Grumman C-2 Greyhound







the c-2 greyhound, derivative of e-2 hawkeye, shares wings , power plants e-2, has widened fuselage rear loading ramp. first of 2 prototypes flew in 1964. after successful testing, grumman began production of aircraft in 1965. c-2 replaced piston-engined grumman c-1 trader in cod role. original c-2a aircraft overhauled extend operational life in 1973.


powered 2 allison t56 turboprop engines, c-2a can deliver 10,000 pounds (4,500 kg) of cargo, passengers or both. can carry litter patients in medical evacuation missions. cage system or transport stand restrains cargo during carrier launch , landing. large aft cargo ramp , door , powered winch allow straight-in rear cargo loading , unloading fast turnaround. greyhound s ability airdrop supplies , personnel, fold wings, , generate power engine starting , other uses provide operational versatility found in no other cargo aircraft.

the c-2 has 4 vertical stabilizers, of 3 fitted rudders. single vertical stabilizer large enough adequate directional control have made aircraft tall fit on aircraft carrier hangar deck. four-stabilizer configuration has advantage of placing outboard rudder surfaces directly in line propeller wash, providing effective yaw control down low airspeeds, such during takeoff , landing. inner-left stabilizer lacks rudder, , has been called executive tail , has nothing compared other three. single c-2 (2797) equipped air-to-air refueling probe not installed in other aircraft.


in 1984, navy ordered 39 new c-2a aircraft replace older airframes. dubbed reprocured c-2a or c-2a(r) due similarity original, new aircraft has airframe improvements , better avionics. older c-2as phased out in 1987, , last of new models delivered in 1990.
