the first st. mary s church


the number , devotion of first parishioners permitted church constructed within 10 years. in 1856 cornerstone laid, , in 1857, first st. mary’s church completed on washington street between spruce , marion streets.


on easter sunday, april 12, 1857, father o’beirne said mass first time in new church seat 600. reading 20th chapter of john’s gospel, father o’beirne proclaimed news of jesus’ empty tomb.
