a secondary tour first established in 1994/1995 season; comprising 6 tournaments, wpbsa minor tour open professionals, ran 1 season. concept revived in 1997/1998 in form of uk tour, following adoption of two-tier tour structure. unlike main tour had restricted membership, uk tour open professional members, competing on main tour—although members of main tour prohibited entering 1999/2000 season. rebranded challenge tour 2000/2001 season, , open players not on main tour , amateurs. 2001/2002 season, challenge tour had restricted membership , offered exclusive professional competition limited number of professionals not members of main tour, , open tour established open players—including players on main , challenge tours. wpbsa operated 3 level circuit until end of 2002/2003 season when split english association of snooker , billiards (easb). since open tour fell under control of easb, amateur governing body, open tour took on amateur status , professional players no longer eligible enter. challenge tour axed upon completion of 2004/2005 season, leaving restricted main tour professional competition provided wpbsa. 2009/2010 season saw attempt establish secondary tour introduction of pro challenge series. 4 of planned 7 events played before series axed due low player participation; 1 of criticisms of event offered no ranking points discouraged participation. recent innovation players tour championship (ptc), series of minor-ranking tournaments open entire professional membership, introduced in 2010/2011. ptc events included amateur leg, making open tour. counted towards rankings professionals on main tour, , player finished in top 8 of ptc order of merit guaranteed tour card following season. ptc discontinued @ end of 2015/2016 season, leaving main tour professional tour.
