Severe Tropical Storm Josta 1994–95 South-West Indian Ocean cyclone season








an extended series of low pressure areas spawned become tropical storm josta on march 5 near comoros in northern mozambique channel. drifted westward while organizing, becoming tropical storm on march 7. on day, jtwc classified josta tropical cyclone 16s. on march 8, josta approached coast of mozambique within 90 km (55 mi) of pemba before turning abruptly east-southeast. convection fluctuated in intensity, becoming better organized on march 9. day, eye feature formed in center of convection, , mfr estimated peak winds of 105 km/h (65 mph). contrast, jtwc upgraded josta equivalent of minimal hurricane winds of 120 km/h (75 mph). eye feature dissipated after due increased shear, causing josta weaken. on march 10, storm re-intensified slightly, aided monsoon, passed 160 km (100 mi) south of mayotte. again weakened thereafter, convection spreading ahead of circulation on madagascar. on march 12, circulation dissipated off northwest coast of madagascar, partially due influence of stronger kylie southeast. rains storm reached 270 mm (11 in) along coast of madagascar, despite storm not making landfall.
