the history of susannah place’s occupancy has been put through oral histories , contextual research. of families , people lived in each house listed below:
no. 58
thomas hughes , family lived here between 1916 , 1929. between 1934 , 1974, house occupied john , adelaide (ada) gallagher, daughter mary anderson husband martin , 2 sons, younger son, ernie, living in house until 1974. house had no more tenants after that.
no. 60
the first tenants of house ellen , francis cunninghame, arrived in australia glasgow on february 8, 1840 on ship arkwright. documents time indicate had been sponsored b smith & co., , lived here between 1844 1845. during time, ellen cunninghame gave birth 2 children first son francis , daughter, ellen when living in no. 60. in 1848 francis joined edward hawskley establish radical newspaper people s advocate , southern vindicator. house run lodging house in 1865 william merchant, tenants being of maritime occupations due close proximity of susannah place docks. dorothea, arthur , emmanuel sarantides lived in house between 1934 , 1946. evidence of occupancy shown through kitchen on ground floor, recreated based on dorothea’s grandchildren’s recollections of visiting grandmother after school.

house no. 62 occupied builders , owners, edward , mary riley. arrived irish immigrants colony susannah sterne mary s daughter first marriage in clonigal, ireland , whom terraces named after. property purchased 450pounds, valuable amount, , incredible feat rileys after arriving 4 years earlier , dealing depression of 1840s. tenant of no. 62 ellen , dennis marshall, lived in house 28 years between 1962 , 1990. remained unofficial caretakers many years, other terraces no longer occupied, last tenants of other houses moving out 1976.

a small grocer shop selling food , essential household items included in house during construction , entrance museum working shop. first tenant james munro, ginger beer maker , lived there in 1845. tenant of corner shop george hill, moved there in 1879 , fell debt 8 years later. remained there until 1898 after reselling stock , furniture repay debts. after being sold eliza , robert sneddon in 1931, store run until 1935 when departure meant end of shop. later tenants include mary carmichael between 1949 , 1954, , last tenant, ronald smith arrived in 1965 , left in 1972.
current shop
through oral histories, current shop has been established in 1920s era, modelled after recollections of jim young. son of hugo , clara youngein, tenants of shop between 1904 , 1930.
