History Oak Flats railway station
the former station in 1951
the railway reached area in 1887, when south coast line extended wollongong north kiama. stations provided @ dunmore , albion park – although albion park station known oak flats until following year.
local politician , sometime premier of new south wales george fuller prominent landholder in district – father had named dunmore – , in 1921 subdivided of land @ oak flats, on southern shore of lake illawarra. development of residential area on next few years spurred nsw government railways build station new subdivision; opened in 1925. original station featured single wooden platform , small, skillion-roofed weatherboard waiting shed.
concerns on accessibility , constrained site led state rail authority relocate station in 2003. $6 million interchange, built bovis lend lease on new site 400 metres east of original, opened on 21 february. building features double pitched roof, band of tangerine-coloured glazed bricks, recycled timber beams , distinctive y-shaped steel columns. opening new facility, transport minister carl scully described 1 of best railway stations in state. plan name new station shellharbour city (oak flats) abandoned following community opposition. earlier station subsequently demolished.
electronic ticketing, in form of opal smart card, has been available @ oak flats since 2014.
