the university of pennsylvania band has been part of student life since 1897. penn band performs @ football , basketball games university functions (e.g. commencement , convocation) throughout year , first college band perform @ macy s thanksgiving day parade. membership fluctuates between 80 , 100 students.



performing arts organizations

penn home numerous organizations promote arts, dance spoken word, jazz stand-up comedy, theatre, cappella , more. performing arts council (pac) oversees 45 student organizations in these areas. pac has 4 subcommittees: cappella council; dance arts council; singer, musicians, , comedians (smac); , theatre arts council (tac-e).


the dance arts council (dac) comprises 13 organizations, including african rhythms, pan-asian dance troupe , west philly swingers. arts house dance company 1 of council s prominent groups. founded in 1985, company known strong technique, innovative student choreography , vivid stage presence.



religious organizations

dating 1857, christian association (a.k.a. ca) oldest religious organization @ university , composed of students mainline protestant backgrounds. when university moved current campus in 1880s ca based out of houston hall. after moving around several times relocated new building @ 36th , locust streets (now arch building), occupied 1928 until 2000. during active period ran several foreign missions camp socio-economically disadvantaged children in philadelphia. @ present ca occupies part of parsonage @ tabernacle united church of christ.


the rohr jewish learning institute s sinai scholars society academic symposium prestigious event brings jewish college students noted jewish academics day of in-depth discussion , debate @ university.


the penn newman catholic center (the newman center ) founded in 1893 mission of supporting students, faculty , staff in religious endeavors. organization brings prominent christian figures campus, including james martin in september 2015. during 2015 world meetings of families, included visit pope francis philadelphia, newman center hosted on 900 penn students , alumni.



the daily pennsylvanian


the daily pennsylvanian independent, student-run newspaper, has been published daily since founded in 1885. newspaper went unpublished may 1943 november 1945 due world war ii. in 1984, university lost editorial , financial control of daily pennsylvanian when newspaper became own corporation. in 2007, daily pennsylvanian won pacemaker award administered associated collegiate press.
