another major military campaign on sea of azov took place during crimean war of 1853–56. naval , ground campaign pitting allied navies of britain , france against russia took place between may , november 1855. british , french forces besieged taganrog, aiming disrupt russian supplies crimea. capturing taganrog result in attack on rostov, strategic city russian support of caucasian operations. on 12 may 1855, allied forces captured kerch , gained access sea of azov, , on 22 may attacked taganrog. attack failed , followed siege. despite vast superiority of allied forces (about 16,000 soldiers against fewer 2,000), city withstood attempts capture it, ended around august 1855 retreat of allied army. individual coastal attacks continued without success , ceased in october 1855.
