in august 2007, mbta published feasibility study exploring possibility of rebuilding yawkey full-service station. study concluded doing increase ridership 60%, 585 daily boardings , alightings 937. on november 15, 2010, governor deval patrick , other officials broke ground on major rebuilding of station, expected completed in spring of 2012. new station has 2 full-length high-level platforms provide level, handicapped-accessible boarding passengers; old platform had wooden ramp accessibility. 2 700-foot-long platforms (a side platform between tracks plus side platform on south side of tracks) connected overpass, , passengers no longer have cross tracks access outbound trains.


the rebuilt station intended first component of larger, private development called fenway center. new station, cost $13.5 million, planned powered entirely solar panels after development opens. although developer, meredith management corporation, wished close station during rebuilding, mbta elected keep open. fenway center, built on air rights on adjacent massachusetts turnpike (i-90), cover of station. part of development, walkways built above station, allowing passengers walk directly pedestrian bridge , platforms beacon street , brookline avenue rather passing through private parking lots. after lengthy negotiations, air-rights deal between city , developer regarding fenway center reached in may 2013. in july 2017, developer , state reached agreement under buildings south of station built first. developer pay state $21 million right delay building deck, owe $3 million more if construction not begin end of 2020.


the framingham/worcester line schedule changed in april 2012 allow temporary single-tracking through station construction. actual station construction activity started in june 2012, , in august 1 track cut, reducing line 1 track through station. platforms installed in late november 2012; construction of elevator shafts began in february 2013. temporary ramp opened in june 2013 passengers use east end of future outbound platform; old platform demolished afterwards make room west ends of new platforms. pedestrian bridge lifted place in august 2013, followed various roof , canopy elements. second track rebuilt in late september, followed remaining platform segments.


the new station opened on march 10, 2014, coinciding planned service increases on framingham/worcester line. before reconstruction, 17 trains stopped @ yawkey each weekday; after, 48 daily trains (24 round trips) stopped. opening first planned january 13, january 27, delayed due problems yawkey elevators , adjustments schedule based on public comment. walkway between new station , fenway park includes large lit statues of uniform numbers retired red sox.


after special events concerts @ fenway park, mbta runs special commuter rail shuttles yawkey south station.


in december 2015, boston globe columnist adrian walker proposed renaming yawkey way , yawkey station because current namesake, tom yawkey, racist made red sox last major league team hire black players. in august 2017, amid racial tension, red sox organization began advocating city change street s name. bill change station s name filed in state legislature.
