plata began career in youth ranks of hometown club barcelona before joining alfaro moreno academia in guayaquil in 2009. after impressing @ alfaro moreno joined youth ranks of ldu quito.


plata impressed liga coach edgardo bauza , called senior side during second stage of 2010 serie season. on august 22, 2010 plata made professional debut ldu quito @ estadio casa blanca in 1–0 victory on olmedo. debut considered promising , plata became fixture rest of season.


on september 18, 2010 plata scored first professional goal in 1–0 victory on espoli. important goal helped liga consolidate position @ top of table. plata ended season appearing in 7 league matches (starting 5) , scoring 1 goal liga captured second stage of 2010 serie , defeated emelec declared national champion 10th time in club s history.

at conclusion of 2010 season, in order continue development, plata loaned major league soccer , selected toronto fc no. 49 pick in 2011 mls superdraft. toronto fc signed plata on march 24, 2011. on april 2 plata made debut toronto second half sub alen stevanović, in 1–1 home draw against chivas usa. on april 27 plata made first start toronto , provided 2 assists in 3–0 away win against fc edmonton in first leg of canadian championship. second leg on may 4, plata again made starting line-up , provided assist receiving man of match honours in 1–0 home win, giving toronto 4–0 aggregate victory on fc edmonton advance canadian championship final. plata got first mls goal in 2–1 victory on houston dynamo goal taken penalty , later went on set second maicon santos, performance earned him mls player of week. on july 2 plata scored crucial goal against vancouver whitecaps fc helping seal toronto s third consecutive canadian championship, earning team berth in concacaf champions league. plata awarded george gross memorial trophy tournament s best player. on july 27 plata made champions league debut against real esteli f.c. coming on gianluca zavarise in 49th minute, plata led team 2–1 home victory scoring both goals. plata s success continued in champions league scoring 2 goals in crucial match-up against fc dallas on october 18 in final group stage game, 3–0 away victory advanced toronto first ever quarter final appearance.


on january 11, 2012 club announced multi-year deal keep plata @ toronto fc; per club policy , league, details of new contract signing not disclosed, reports suggest $500,000 fee paid secure him. plata scored first goal of season on april 4, during second leg of 2011–12 concacaf champions league semifinals against santos laguna, plata scored both goals in 6–2 away loss.


plata returned ldu quito on six-month loan toronto on july 11, 2012.


real salt lake

plata re-joined toronto in january 2013 upon end of loan. however, on january 30, 2013 traded real salt lake in exchange second-round pick in 2015 mls superdraft.


in 2014, twitter hashtag #plataesoro became popular, play on meaning of plata s name, plata being spanish word silver , oro meaning gold.
