from latter half of 20th century, state has produced number of notable painters such rufino tamayo, rodolfo nieto, rodolfo morales, , francisco toledo. these 4 painters have been influential in establishment of new movements of art state. these movements have spurred exhibitions, galleries, museums , schools such museo de arte contemporaneo (maco) , instituto de artes gráficas de oaxaca (iago). many of today s artists oaxaca have been inspired past indigenous paintings colonial era works of miguel cabrera.


the state has not produced many writers painters important names include adalberto carriedo, jacobo dalevuelta, andrés henestrosa , natalia toledo.


music , dance inextricably linked state s folkloric heritage. more modern composers such macedonio alcalá, samuel, mondragón noriega , josé lópez alavés influenced traditional melodies. traditional music , dance has roots in indigenous traditions existed long before spanish arrived. these traditions added elements european culture , catholicism. 3 main traditions found in state of zapotecs , mixtecs, small distinct community of afro-mexicans. of best known dances include los diablos, la tortuga, las mascaritas , los tejorones. in afro-mexican costa chica region, dance called las chilenas stands out. la sandunga song typifies musical style of tehuantepec region , musical style called son bioxho endemic form of son style played drums, empty tortoise shell , reed flute.
