Recognition of same-sex relationships LGBT rights in Guernsey



guernsey has recognised civil partnerships performed in united kingdom , other relationships treated such uk law succession purposes in inheritance , other matters respecting interests in property since 2 april 2012. proposal abolish state-sanctioned marriages in favour of union civile (for both opposite-sex , same-sex couples) rejected states in favour of same-sex marriage law in december 2015.


in february 2016, working group, consisted of chief minister jonathan le tocq , deputies elis bebb , chris green, established in order prepare draft bill. bill approved states, in 33–5 vote, on 21 september , received royal assent on 14 december 2016.


on 26 april 2017, marriage legislation completed final stage when commencement ordinance approved states of guernsey. law went effect on 2 may , same-sex couples begin marrying on 4 may. same-sex marriage law not apply sark , alderney. however, alderney recognise same-sex marriages abroad purposes (i.e. inheritance).


on 18 october, 2017, states of alderney council voted 9-0 legalize same-sex marriage on alderny during late night state meeting. vice president ian tugby, lone abstainer, said supported same-sex marriage, abstained due receiving messages residents saying concerned impact on children. law go effect following approval queen , privy council.
