basic officer course (boc)
introduction , background
after earning commission, unrestricted line officer marine lieutenants complete officer basic course prior beginning military occupational speciality (mos) qualification training prepare them service in fleet marine force or other operating forces assignments (viz., marine corps security force regiment or marine corps embassy security group). majority of marine corps officers commissioned through usmc officer candidate school (ocs), of balance commissioned through marine corps option @ either u.s. naval academy or naval reserve officer training corps (nrotc) @ civilian college or university. (annually, there few officers graduate 1 of other federal service academies granted permission receive usmc commissions.) restricted line/limited duty officers direct commissioned chief warrant officer ranks either first lieutenant or captain , not attend boc; however, warrant officers have completed wobc @ tbs prior beginning officer service in operating forces.
most officers attend boc second lieutenant after commissioning @ ocs or within few months of graduation , commissioning either usna or nrotc program. newly commissioned officers may serve short period of time in interim assignment (such assistant athletic coach @ usna) before beginning tbs/boc. few officers attend boc first lieutenant because commissioned through platoon leaders class (plc law) program, permits them attend law school second lieutenants , attend tbs/boc after promotion first lieutenant upon receiving law degree. in rare cases, officer receives initial commission in branch of armed forces, , has been promoted first lieutenant, may receive interservice transfer marine corps , attend tbs first lieutenant.
course overview
the officer basic course lasts 28 weeks, during new officers receive classroom, field, , practical application training on weapons, tactics, leadership , protocol. classroom events include platform instruction, tactical decision games (tdgs), sand table exercises (stexs), decision-forcing cases, , small group discussions. there various field events, beginning fireteam , squad level, , progressing platoon-reinforced , company-sized events. field events consist of realistic blank-fire training , live fire ranges.

nearing completion of boc, lieutenants selected mos, including approximately 1/3 of officers infantry (includes reconnaissance , light armored reconnaissance) , other ground combat specialties, 1/3 marine aviation (including naval aviators – aircraft pilots, naval flight officers – aircraft weapons, navigation, , sensor systems officers, , aviation command , control, , air defense positions), , remaining 1/3 logistics combat (combat support , combat service support), or headquarters/command , control – c4istarew) positions.

ground combat element (gce) – (combat support): assault amphibian, combat engineer, field artillery, ground intelligence, , tank
aviation combat element (ace) – (aviation support): air defense control, air intelligence, air support control, air traffic control, aircraft maintenance, aviation supply, low altitude air defense
logistics combat element (lge) – (combat service support): financial management, ground supply, logistics (landing support , motor transport), manpower, personnel , administration, personnel retrieval , processing, , substance abuse control.
command element (ce) – (command , control): civil affairs, communications , magtf communications planner, counterintelligence/human source intelligence, intelligence, magtf intelligence, judge advocate, magtf plans, military police/law enforcement, military information support operations (psychological operations), public affairs, , signals intelligence/ground electronic warfare.
following boc, officer attend 1 or more additional schools trained in specialty, , assigned unit in fleet marine force or other operating forces of marine corps (e.g., marine barracks, washington, dc, marine corps chemical biological incident response force, marine corps security force regiment, or marine corps embassy security group.
