early life
he born urdu-speaking family @ shibpur in april 1928. grandfather abdur rehman hailed varanasi district , farmer, had left karachi , had settled @ shibpur. amin s father brought vindictive step-mother. amin s mother hailed bhagalpur district. when amin 8 years, 1 of 2 boys in neighbourhood survived epidemic of smallpox. had no formal education. became jute mill worker in 1942 @ time when calcutta experiencing regular bombardments during world war ii. wage rs. 7 , 13 annah per 1100 yards of jute. worked entire day, , had english education @ night school. became member of bengal jute mill mazdoor union @ time. after end of world war ii in 1945, left job , joined politics.

in 1946 when 18, had earned membership of communist party of india on same day along chandra roy. on 29 july 1946, attended huge rally @ maidan on call of bengal provincial trade union congress (bptuc), state wing of india trade union congress (aituc), on day when successful strike organised under call of bptuc. had experienced riots of calcutta in 1946-47 till independence. had married in march 1948. father-in-law died cholera after 6 months, , after 6 months mother died tetanus.

on 29 march, alambazar of kolkata experienced bloody riot following massive influx of refugees east pakistan after 1950 barisal riots. within hours of attack on bengali hindu muslim family slaughtered hindus on previous night, riots spread , around 5000 muslims had taken refuge on roof of baranagar jute mill. ten muslims murdered including woman. @ point, communist party of india (cpi) leadership had instructed party members move east pakistan. on 7 april, amin along family boarded special train dakshineswar towards gede via ranaghat , reached darshana walking 12 km across border. there, took train reach parbatipur in dinajpur district. had stayed refugee in dinajpur till october 1950, , had organised mass rally there , subsequently warned police. came india, again re-instructed party in march 1951 organise party @ saidpur in east pakistan. in september, arrested in badarganj being communist under section 7/3, public safety act.
on 12 november 1953 released rangpur jail after 20 months of detention. returned titagarh immediately. made member of titagarh local committee of cpi. started movement beedi mazdoor union @ titagarh , organiser @ jute mill @ khardaha. while organising trade union in britannia engineering ltd. in titagarh, assisted suren dhar chowdhury, sunil roy, dr. girijamohon chatterjee (an influential mbbs doctor). in 1957 assembly elections, amin entrusted party bhatpara , ensured cpi s candidate sitaram gupta defeated indian national congress candidate 240 votes. in 1962 assembly elections, suren dhar chowdhury cpi s candidate & lost elections around 2000 votes krishnakant shukla became mla 3rd time. in 1964, when communist party split, amin joined newly formed communist party of india (marxist) cpi(m) of workers though suren dhar chowdhury , sunil roy stayed loyal cpi.

in 1967 assembly elections, amin made cpi(m) candidate @ titagarh , though pramod dasgupta campaigned him, yet amin lost election due cross-voting between communists. suren dhar chowdhury, cpi s candidate got 11000 votes, amin got 17400 & indian national congress candidate krishnakant shukla won 700 votes. on request of pramod dasgupta, amin left job of rs. 1000 salary & became party whole-timer. in 1969, amin won assembly elections titagarh , in february 1970, made minister of transport united front government led ajoy mukherjee. after 13 months of 1969 assembly elections, government disbanded , in 1971 assembly elections, amin won beating horrific semi-fascist terror administration had turned deaf & dumb. residence bombarded.
in 1971, in west bengal state conference of cpi(m) @ midnapore, elected member of west bengal state committee. 1972 assembly elections in west bengal can described farce , mockery of democracy terror of unforeseen proportions unleashed. amin lost elections 40,000 votes , jyoti basu lost 50,000 votes. amin kept family @ ranchi , returned calcutta. kishan mazdoor, urdu weekly of cpi(m) resumed publication under patronage. brought family calcutta. in 1969 8th party congress @ cochin, delegate.
in 1977 assembly elections, cpi(m) won sweeping majority , formed left front government led jyoti basu. amin re-elected titagarh defeating municipal chairman gangaprasad show margin of 13000. amin minister of transport in 1st left front government. minister, had sold eight-seated helicopter owned west bengal govt, , money bought double-decker buses improve public transport in calcutta. gave permit several new routes sbstc, private bus, minibus & long-route buses. had implemented launch & steamer service in hooghly riverways initiative taken in stint during united front government. mla, made sure state government acquisitioned britannia engg. ltd. @ titagarh , re-instate workers less 58 years age. kennison jute mill @ titagarh acquisitioned govt. of india after shut down bard & co.
in 1982 assembly elections, amin defeated @ titagarh 132 votes. in same year, co-opted central committee of party. in 12th party congress @ calcutta in 1985, elected member of central committee along anil biswas, biman bose , buddhadeb bhattacharjee. in 1984 parliament elections, launched candidate barrackpore (lok sabha constituency). however, lost indian national congress gained sympathy votes following assassination of prime minister indira gandhi. lost assembly elections titagarh again in 1987 prime minister rajiv gandhi declared if congress wins @ titagarh, ensure closed mills & factories re-opened. in 1988, nominated candidate party rajya sabha , remained mp till 1994, , re-located new delhi.
in 1996, amin made cpi(m) candidate garden reach, constituency has deluded left front candidate thrice in row. amin won seat whopping 14,000 votes , made minister of minorities affairs & development. after rekha bera, minister of employment & e.s.i died, amin given additional charge of ministry. in 1998, amin made secretariat member of cpi(m) west bengal state committee.
in 2001 assembly elections, amin re-elected garden reach margin of 32,000 votes. made minister of labour 6th left front government led buddhadeb bhattacharjee predecessor shanti ghatak became ill before elections, , died after. in 2005, wife moimunnisa died. in 2006 assembly elections, though left front increased seats & votes, yet amin lost surprisingly garden reach. in 2007, elected general secretary of centre of indian trade unions 12th conference @ bangalore held 17–21 january. m. k. pandhe re-elected president. in march 2010, @ 13th conference of centre of indian trade unions, amin succeeded tapan sen general secretary amin becoming increasingly ill. amin made vice president. @ 2012, in 20th party congress @ kozhikode (4 april-9 april), made special invitee central committee.
