around 1500, small group of luo known biito-luo, led chief labongo (his full title became isingoma labongo rukidi, known mpuga rukidi), encountered bantu-speaking peoples living in area of bunyoro. these luo settled bantu , established babiito dynasty, replacing bachwezi dynasty of empire of kitara. according bunyoro legend, labongo, first in line of babiito kings of bunyoro-kitara, twin brother of kato kimera, first king of buganda. these luo assimilated bantu, , lost language , culture.
later in 16th century, other luo-speaking people moved area encompasses present day south sudan, northern uganda , north-eastern congo (drc) – forming alur, jonam , acholi. conflicts developed when encountered lango, had been living in area north of lake kyoga. lango speak luo language. according driberg (1923), lango reached eastern province of uganda (otuke hills), having traveled southeasterly shilluk area. lango language similar shilluk language. there not consensus whether lango share ancestry luo (with whom share common language), or if have closer ethnic kinship easterly ateker neighbours, whom share many cultural traits.
between middle of 16th century , beginning of 17th century, luo groups proceeded eastwards. 1 group called padhola (or jopadhola - people of adhola), led chief called adhola, settled in budama in eastern uganda. settled in thickly forested area defence against attacks bantu neighbours had settled there. self-imposed isolation helped them maintain language , culture amidst bantu , ateker communities.
those went further field joka jok , joka owiny. jok luo moved deeper kaviirondo gulf; descendants present-day jo kisumo , jo rachuonyo amongst others. jo owiny occupied area near got ramogi or ramogi hill in alego of siaya district. owiny s ruins still identifiable day @ bungu owiny near lake kanyaboli.
the other notable luo group omolo luo inhabited ugenya , gem areas of siaya district. last immigrants jo kager, related omollo luo. leader ochieng waljak ger used advanced military skill drive away omiya or bantu groups, living in present-day ugenya around 1750ad.
