in controlled study 205 alcoholics, heavy tobacco dependence (an average of 26.8 cigarettes per day) , 3 months or more of continuous abstinence drugs , alcohol, placed @ random in 1 of 3 treatment groups: american lung association quit program plus nicotine anonymous meetings group, behavioral counseling plus physical exercise group, or behavioral counseling plus nicotine gum group. effectiveness of treatment programs measured @ post-treatment, 6 months, , twelve-months following post-treatment based on self-reports confirmed confirmed biochemical , informant reports. following treatment behavior counseling , exercise group had highest quit percentage (60%) followed behavioral counseling plus nicotine gum group, ala quit program plus nica group @ 31%. @ six-month follow groups had similar percentages of members maintaining abstinence tobacco (29%, 27%, , 21%, respectively) , @ twelve-months (27%, 27%, , 26%, respectively). out of participants, 4% relapsed on alcohol or drugs. alcohol relapse rate did not differ treatment group.
