culture
worpswede famous nationwide long tradition artists colony. nowadays, 130 artists , craftsmen , women live there permanently; though 1 should include of inhabitants of worpswede, since many artists or have @ least kind of arts. example, owner of small café vernissage displays paintings in café.
artistic community
in 1884 mimi stolte, daughter of shopkeeper in worpswede, met fritz mackensen, young student of arts, while staying aunt in düsseldorf. since destitute, invited him worpswede spend holidays family.
in 1889 settled in worpswede, accompanied other painters such hans ende , otto modersohn, , followed others such fritz overbeck, carl vinnen, , paula becker (who married otto modersohn). other artists came, example writers , poets gerhard hauptmann, thomas mann, , rainer maria rilke , sculptor clara westhoff (who married rilke).

in 1895 heinrich vogeler joined first artists around fritz mackensen. not painter draftsman, designer , architect. since growing industrialization made necessary find new ways of transporting goods , sorts of materials, idea came build railway through teufelsmoor-area. vogeler charged building of railway stations along route. in 1910 railway station @ worpswede opened.

the “barkenhoff” in worpswede, 2007
in 1895 vogeler bought cottage , planted many birch trees around it, gave house new name: barkenhoff (low german birkenhof, literally translated birch-tree-cottage). became cultural centre of artistic scene of worpswede.
his participation in world war i, in hans ende killed, made vogeler contemplate life. result became pacifist after war had ended , joined communist party of germany (kpd). @ time , wife martha divorced. point on, wanted work ideologically. left former way of painting romantic scenes , started make proletarian content center of work. in 1931 emigrated soviet union , deported in 1941 soviet authorities kazakhstan, died in 1942.

worpsweder käseglocke, created architect bruno taut in 1921 , built in 1926 writer edwin koenemann. small structure given name because of resemblance cheese cover. since 2001 käseglocke has been used museum
worpswede cheese bell (because of resemblance bell-shaped glass cover conventionally used cheese plates) colloquial term residential building located in artists’ village of worpswede in lower saxony. built writer edwin koenemann in 1926 following architectural draft of bruno taut. nowadays, wooden house under preservation , in last couple of years has been renovated. building, caused quite stir because of unusual igloo shape, received name cheese bell inhabitants of worpswede.

edwin koenemann came worpswede young man in 1908 aim of becoming artist. after failed attempts in different artistic genres managed tour guide. today koenemann 1 of well-known citizens of worpswede. former home reopened public on may 1, 2001. story of koenemann’s posthumous fame started in 1920s. architect habich based in worpswede , worked closely german artist bernhard hoetger. habich gave koenemann, interested in expressionism, 1 particular edition of taut-magazine frühlicht published in 1921/22. in magazine koenemann came across plans taut-one-family-house, supposed built on central-german exhibition in magdeburg, yet building never built there. there talk house cupola or shape of igloo, @ point in time had never been built before.

koenemann, dabbled architect, recognised opportunity in draft published in limited circulation. took rough sketches magazine frühlicht , used them direct templates own house on weyerberg in worpswede. koenemann’s house, called “glockenhaus” (the bell house), completed in 1926. koenemann , appointed carpenter closely abided taut’s specifications when constructing outer façade. in detail there changes made, such both of small windows next front door not being rectangular in taut’s design, rather triangular.

inside, koenemann designed unique room layout. central hall, arranged expressionistic mantelpiece composed misfired pottery, became principal position, while living room central room in taut s design. on ground floor of igloo, situated next hall , small toilet, bedroom , kitchen. upstairs there 2 tiny guest rooms , generous studio room.

comparable hoetger-buildings, “cheese cover” became attraction of artists’ village. during lifetime house known museum outsider. in late 1920s, while bruno taut working on hufeisensiedlung britz in berlin, repeatedly visited worpswedian garden planner leberecht migge. migge lived right next koenemann, taut must have seen imitation of draft, not known how felt plagiarism committed koenemann. latter, however, still presented himself ingenious creator of type of architecture.
long after koenemann’s death art historian noticed taut’s drafts “frühlicht” , thereby discovered building of taut in worpswede. registered association “freunde worpswedes” (“friends of worpswede”) acquired dilapidated building “cheese bell” estate of koenmann’s widow in 1994. financial support of preservation orders devotedly began detailed restoration of dome building, situated under treetops. lacquer coats removed , colors true original applied. of pieces specially manufactured , door handles reconstructed. green tar paper, similar dilapidated original version, had shipped canada.
koenmann’s life , living environment displayed inside „cheese bell“. original furniture didn’t remain intact, association “friends of worpswede” presents not traditional modern arts , crafts works, such rustic furniture, chairs made bernhard hoetger , cupboards made heinrich vogeler, including arm’s cupboard of pacifist.
the garden, disarrangement of wall fragments , grotto buildings, draft of koenemann, inspired bernhard hoetger. currently, construction being restored original condition. project of “friends of worpswede” on koenmann’s estate reconstruction of guesthouse 1930s: narrow ‘nurdach’ house.
