hope continued in command of small ships several years, pausing in 1792 marry distant cousin, lady anne hope johnstone. couple have 2 daughters , 4 sons before anne s death in 1818. in 1794, hope in command of hms incendiary, fireship of channel fleet attached lord howe s force sent engage french. in march, hope given step post captain, taking command of ship of line hms bellerophon, flagship of admiral thomas pasley.

returning long convalescence, hope again requested duncan , commanded flagship hms kent next 3 years. in 1799, kent duncan s flagship in supporting anglo-russian invasion of batavian republic, hope being present @ surrender of dutch fleet in texel royal navy. sent britain dispatches proclaiming surrender, hope lauded both british , russian courts, king george iii presenting him £500 , tsar paul making him commander of order of st john.
in 1801 in mediterranean, under command of admiral lord keith, kent carried sir ralph abercromby , headquarters invasion of egypt, successful campaign forced surrender of french occupying force. hope not present conclusion of action, returning britain admiral duncan after sir richard bickerton raised flag on kent. awarded order of crescent emperor selim iii service. in 1800, hope began second career, gaining seat of dumfries burghs in house of commons through family influence. during time mp, hope visited constituency , equally appeared in parliament. lost constituency brother in 1802, in 1804 elected seat of dumfriesshire, again through family connections. retained post until retirement public life in 1830.
