general characteristics

yulius fuchik 226.4 metres (743 ft) long overall , 210.3 metres (690 ft) between perpendiculars. had beam of 35.0 metres (114.8 ft) , depth upper deck 23.0 metres (75.5 ft). keel mast, measured 50.5 metres (166 ft). draft of ship when loaded summer load line 11 metres (36 ft), corresponding displacement of 60,262 tons. gross register tonnage 35,817 register tons, net register tonnage 15,497 register tons , deadweight tonnage 37,850 tons. in terms of main dimensions, yulius fuchik wider older seabee ships, otherwise main dimensions identical original design.

the general arrangements of yulius fuchik largely dictated cargo handling system. superstructure, spanning across weather deck, housed part of ship s accommodation space. entire crew of 50 housed in single cabins, of them located within narrow side compartments on both sides of cargo decks. in addition normal messes , saloons, amenities of ship included sports , hobby rooms, library, sauna, photographic laboratory , swimming pool.

cargo capacity

yulius fuchik belonged distinct group of cargo ships known barge carriers offered, @ time, highest theoretical loading , unloading rate of cargo ships. lighter aboard ship (lash) system based on unpowered barges, known lighters, loaded on board larger vessel transport between inland waterways separated open seas. purpose, yulius fuchik had vast cargo decks , large lifting platform in stern.

although basic design of ship based on existing seabee ships capacity of 38 1,000-ton lighters, yulius fuchik designed 26 different danube-sea barges weighing 1,300 tons each. both lower deck , tweendeck accommodate 8 38-metre (125 ft) barges, 2 side-by-side, while longer weather deck had enough space ten barges, each capable of carrying 1,070 tons of cargo. barges moved longitudinally in cargo holds on remote-controlled platforms. although bottom deck, located 0.8 metres (2.6 ft) below waterline @ maximum draught, protected watertight stern door, flooding while ship underway not have compromised stability of vessel.

the striking feature of ship lifting platform in stern, abaft propellers , rudders, supported high cantilever structures on both sides. although arrangement similar original seabee design, syncrolift cargo elevator electric instead of hydraulic. 8 winches in 4 pairs capable of hoisting 2,600 tons of cargo @ speed of 0.7 metres per minute (2.3 feet per minute), giving ship calculated loading capacity of 2,600 tons per hour in optimum conditions.

in addition purpose-built barges, yulius fuchik carry other types of cargo. although each barge loaded 15 standard 20-foot shipping containers, carried on cargo decks , moved around barge-handling equipment. using special container adapters on cargo rails, yulius fuchik carry 1,312 loaded containers plus additional 240 empty containers on upper deck stacks, bringing total container capacity 1,552 teu. in addition, 54 lash-type barges (the type used nuclear-powered sevmorput) carried set of adapters, , decks strengthened ro-ro cargo axle loads 22 tons. furthermore, ship carried 2 440 kw (590 hp) pusher tugs handling barges.

power , propulsion

yulius fuchik powered 4 16-cylinder wärtsilä-pielstick 16pc2-5v400 medium-speed diesel engines located amidships, each producing 6,620 kw (8,880 hp) @ 504 rpm. engines coupled via double input/single output reduction gearboxes 2 5.5-metre (18 ft) kamewa controllable pitch propellers turning @ 135 rpm. propeller shafts of considerable length, , had supported 6 bearings. propulsion system gave ship maximum speed of 20.5 knots (38.0 km/h; 23.6 mph), typical service speed less, 19 knots (35 km/h; 22 mph). underway, ship burned heavy fuel oil @ rate of 128 tons per day. propulsion system of yulius fuchik largest deviation original seabee design utilized single 36,000 shaft horsepower (27,000 kw) steam turbine coupled fixed pitch propeller instead of twin shaft diesel power plant.

for maneuvering @ ports, yulius fuchik equipped 900 kw bow thruster. onboard electricity produced 4 six-cylinder medium-speed valmet-b&w 6s28 diesel alternators, each generating 1,250 kva.
