in september 1918, etsnc granted students army training corps unit, consisted of approximately 70 male students before demobilized in december following end of world war i. 1920s formative period student government on campus, in form of student welfare council little actual power; binnion claimed etsnc students did not desire self-government .
during binnion s presidency, college took highly paternalistic attitude towards students in line principle of in loco parentis, stipulated should serve surrogate absent parents in setting , enforcing rules of behavior , discipline . resulted in strict rules applying students, female students: women barred eating @ men s boarding houses or downtown restaurants, had abide rigid curfew, , not date without parents permission. nonetheless, life on campus far boring, ample opportunities attend lectures , concerts participate in extracurricular organizations. regarding commerce itself, however, binnion opined social opportunities...are limited...there little in way of excitement here other picture shows, sunday schools , preaching .
in 1921, less 10 of approximately 500 etsnc students unaffiliated church. best represented christian denominations on campus methodists , baptists, followed disciples of christ , presbyterians. binnion remarked student body, in 1921, composed largely of country boys , girls of old-time american ancestry .
in 1917, w. l. mayo literary society young men founded, first of new breed of student club emphasized social activities , academic excellence. joined several other similar clubs, such demosthenean society, history club, , latin club, more lighthearted groups such citamard club. largest organization female students in 1922 ywca.
during etsnc era, future lieutenant governor of texas thomas whitfield davidson briefly attended school before enrolling @ university of chicago , columbia university.
