map plotting track , intensity of storm, according saffir–simpson scale
hurricane arlene first identified tropical depression on july 31 between lesser antilles , cape verde islands tiros vi satellite. large cyclone, estimated @ 5 degrees in diameter, steadily tracked westward , northwestward , intensified tropical storm on august 2. later day, navy reconnaissance aircraft reached storm , found clear eye , barometric pressure of 987 mbar (hpa; 29.15 inhg), resulting in arlene being classified hurricane. meant storm had rapidly intensified tropical depression hurricane within span of 18 hours. intensification continued 6 hours, @ time storm attained initial peak strength winds of 100 mph (155 km/h), classifying arlene category 2 hurricane.
early on august 3, arlene began weaken turned towards west once more. storm continued weaken before rapidly degenerating tropical depression on august 4. quick decrease in intensity result of sudden increase in vertical wind shear near core of cyclone. later day, system passed near northern leeward islands; however, depression poorly organized. former hurricane steadily tracked northwestward , began regenerate on august 7.
as storm began reorganize, forward motion had become virtually stationary later began increase arlene turned northeastward, beginning recurvature main belt of westerlies. ships in vicinity of depression reported had regained gale-force winds on august 8, resulting in advisories on arlene being re-initiated around time. later day, navy reconnaissance plane found hurricane-force winds around center of storm, resulting in arlene being upgraded minimal hurricane second time.
